The endangered whooping crane travel 2500 miles to spend mild winters in the coastal bend, primarily in the Aransas Wildlife Refuge, 30 miles north of Rockport.
Captain Tommy Moore’s Birding Aransas sightseeing boat frequently experience close encounters with individual, pairs, and families of these migrants on Bludworth Island. While not officially a part of the refuge proper, it sits closely, just across the Intracoastal Canal, or ICW, and the cranes often can be found feeding around its lengthy shorelines.
